The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radio-active material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

The Sandwich Water District serves a winter population of 17,000 and throughout the summer months, serves an estimated 25,000 consumers from groundwater wells #2 through 11. Wells #2, 3, and 9 are located at the Boiling Springs Well Field in East Sandwich; well #7 is located at the Nye Pond Well Field; wells #4, 6, and 10 can be found at the Pinkham Road Well Field; well #11 is located at the Farmersville Road Well Field; and well #8 is located on Farmersville Road near Newtown Road. Well #1 has been off-line since 1976 and was abandoned in 1998. Well #5, located at Weeks Pond Well Field, was taken out of service in 1996 as a precautionary measure due to the potential for contamination. For additional water supply, interconnections exist between Sandwich and the South Sagamore, Centerville, Osterville, and Marstons Mills Water Districts, although no water was utilized from those sources in 2002. In 2003, a connection is expected to be made to the Upper Cape Water Supply Cooperative.

The water from all wells is treated to control corrosion of household plumbing. The water in well #8 is treated for iron content.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contamination. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk.
