CHLORINATION NOTICE
During the warmer months of 2010 we added small amounts of chlorine to four District tanks due to water quality concerns and a change in laboratory protocol requirements by the Environmental Protection Agency for analysis of routine water samples. These changes involved increased nutrients which create conditions for the samples which do not represent conditions in the District's water distribution system. This year (2011) in anticipation of the same potential water quality problems, we have added equipment to chlorinate at Wells 5, 7 and 8. We have carefully analyzed several options in conjunction with our Engineering Firm and have determined the addition of chlorine at the wellhead using extremely low levels, one tenth of one part per million (0.1 PPB) would be effective to maintain water quality and we would anticipate little or no detection of chlorine by our customers. Should the water quality change we will respond accordingly. We have applied to DEP for approval to chlorinate currently at those three wells and intend to apply for the other locations
this spring. |

Sandwich Board of Water Commissioners
Richard W. Anderson, Chairman
Peter S. Thomas, Commissioner
Peter D. Howell, Commissioner
Dan Mahoney, Sandwich Water Superintendent
The Sandwich Water District serves a winter population of 17,000 and throughout the summer months, serves an estimated 25,000 consumers from ten groundwater wells. The wells are located:
at the Boiling Springs Well Field in East Sandwich (3 wells- #2,#3, #9) |
at the Pinkham Road Well Field (3 wells- #4, #6, #10) |
near Farmersville Road (2 wells- #11, #8) |
at the Nye Pond Well Field (1 well- #7) |
Weeks Pond (1 well- #5) currently offline due to potential threat of contamination.
The potential for contamination has been eliminated and Well #5 has been reconditioned
and is available for service. |
The Sandwich Water District treats all of its wells for corrosion control. The addition of potassium hydroxide raises the naturally acidic pH of the water which reduces the corrosion of household plumbing and lowers exposure to lead and copper. In addition, the water in well # 8 is treated for iron content and wells #4, #6, and #10 for PCE control.

Community Awareness Tip!
Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001 there clearly is a need to heighten security measures for water supplies and water system infrastructure. Residents are the eyes and ears of the community and we encourage you to call your local police with concerns about suspicious activities, illegal dumping, or other reportable offenses.

As residents of Cape Cod we all can contribute to protecting our natural resources through proper waste disposal. Do not pour hazardous wastes or paints down any septic systems, private or public drains, on the ground, or into waterways. Safe disposal of materials through the Hazardous Waste Collection Program will help to keep our drinking water and our community pollution-free. |
